"Why waste your money looking up your family tree? Just go into politics and your opponents will do it for you!" -- Mark Twain

Greetings Kinfolks and Guests I have been pursuing my kin since 1987 and my searches have sometimes been successful and sometimes dead-ends. Most of my ancestors are from the Carolinas, Mississippi and Texas. It is nice to get new leads to those pesky ancestors that "hide" so well from our pursuits. I am a retired Army Master Sergeant and also retired from Civil Service. Although Betty passed away in June, 2005, I still hope to go on some of those ancestor hunts. Good luck to you in your searches...

My Grandfather was born in Itawamba county Mississippi in 1836. We share the same name and the odd fact that he is 107 years older than me. He was 67 years old when my father was born in 1903, and my father was 40 years old when I was born in 1943. All this without the modern miracle of Viagra. He left Mississippi for Texas and settled in the Sulphur Springs area. Finding information on his father, Pleasant Blackwell Downing and his Ancestors, have proved to be frustrating at times. Hope some visitors to this site will produce some leads to these old codgers.

My mom and dad, Addie Leila Carroll and Henry Young Downing, are passed on now. However I would like to give tribute to them. In hard times, they raised five sons from boys to men, giving unending support every step of the way. Each son served in the military, and four sons made a career of, and retired from military service. During this time, mom and dad had to say many goodbyes, as their sons came and went on their military travels. Long separations were common. Goodbyes were tough - I was always fine until mom started crying. I miss her right now. Thanks again mom and dad, for "holding my hand" all those years. I'm sure J.D., Virgil, Ray and Kenneth thank you both too. The bittersweet memories are so precious...

A friend once told me - "My Mother paid a Genealogist $500.00 to research her family tree... then, had to pay $1,500.00 to keep it quiet!"

The Downing and Carroll ancestors came to America from the British Isles - Scotland and Ireland. John Carroll was born in Scotland in 1667 and migrated to County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. His son, Joseph Carroll was born in 1699 and came to America in 1729. He settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Joseph's father, John, had been awarded a Land Grant in the American Colonies from his service in the Army of William, Prince of Orange. John's Land Grant passed to Joseph and in 1750 he migrated with his family to York District, South Carolina, where he claimed land on the Little Catawba River near Bullocks Creek. Joseph provided supplies to the Revolutionary Army, and had sons, John, Thomas, Samuel and Joseph Elias, that fought in the Army of General Sumter during the American Revolution - 1779, 1780 and 1781.
