Ancestors of Matilda E. Farr

Generation One

1. Matilda E.1 Farr (Richard, #2) was born circa 1794 at Union Co, SC. She
married Rev. Drury Harrington Jr., son of Drury Harrington Sr. and Rachel Petty,
circa 1810 at Union Co, SC. She died on 29 Dec 1845 at Russell Co, AL.

Extensive research by several descendants has failed to yield proof that Matilda
E. Farr is the daughter of Richard Farr. However, after reviewing all of the
Farr's in Union County who are potential parents, the process of elimination
indicates that Richard Farr is the most likely candidate for Matilda's father.
Richard Farr's brother, James Farr, is also a candidate but he listed his three
children in his will. One bit of inferential evidence is that Richard Farr's
wife, Lucy McDaniel, had a younger sister named Matilda and it is possible that
Lucy named a daughter after her sister.

A major problem is that Richard and Lucy Farr did not mention a daughter named
Matilda in their wills. Matilda married Drury Harrington when she was about 15
or 16 years old about 1809 and it is possible that she eloped and was
disinherited by Richard Farr shortly before his death in 1810. On 3 January
1817, the executors of Richard Farr's estate divided the slaves between Lucy and
five of her children. Matilda E. Farr and a proven son, James Farr, are not
mentioned in this division. Matilda Farr Harrington died in 1845, in Russell
County, Alabama, 14 years before Lucy Farr died in Union County, South Carolina.
The distance and loss of communication could explain why Matilda's heirs were
not mentioned in Lucy's will.
