Special Thanks to Jane Bennett for contributing this Bio of Elendor (Warren) Strother
* * * * *
Regarding Elendor, I have constructed a rough chronology of her life:
1836: b. in KY, probably Wayne County
1839: removed with her family to Itawamba County, MS
1850: enumerated on Fed Census for Itawamba County with mother, Margery (HANCOCK) WARREN and older brother Jackson J. WARREN. Reuben had died earlier in the year. He was in his late 80s, and possibly as old as 90.
1855: Margery WARREN applies for a widow's pension in Oktibbeha County, MS
185?: Elendor probably married ____ STROTHER. I have not been able to find the marriage record.
1860: Elendor STROTHER is enumerated on the Fed census in Oktibbeha County, MS. She is enumerated with Reuben STROTHER, age 2, who I assume to be her son. No husband is listed. Was he dead? If not, where was he? She is living with the Samuel McCLELLAN family. A few lines away (on the census page) her widowed sister Nancy (WARREN) ADAMS is living with another McCLELLAN family.
1870: She is enumerated with Pleasant B. DOWNING. Reuben has disappeared. Did he die? Did she send him to live with another family? Did the McCLELLAN's keep him? He never shows up nor is he mentioned again.
1880: She's enumerated again with Pleasant.
1900 & 1910: I don't have these censuses
1903: Elendor writes a letter to the Federal Pension Bureau asking if she's eligible to receive a pension based on her father's Revolutionary War service. The letter is in Margery WARREN's Rev War pension file in the National Archives and is on the microfilm. Note: The film copy is overexposed and hard to read.
1917: Elendor dies.
If you want to do any DOWNING research in Tom Green County (where San Angelo is located) look also for the spelling DOUNING. For some reason, the family adopted a misspelling of the surname, although I noticed the variant spelling was dropped after a while.
Well, James, I hope this information helps. My compliments on your wonderful web site.

Dea: from the San Angelo Daily Standard, Monday, 22 January 1917, p.2:
"Mrs. Ellen DOUNING [sic] -- The death of Mrs. Ellen DOUNING, 80, occurred at 3:30
o'clock Monday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs.
P. H. ROBBINS, 631 East Baker street. The funeral was conducted Monday afternoon at
3:30 o'clock under the direction of the Robison [sic] Undertaking company, the Rev.
Jewell MATTHEWS of the Church of Christ, officiating. The deceased is survived by
three grown children, namely: Mrs. P.H. ROBBINS, San Angelo, and J.L DOUNING and
G.A. DOUNING, the latter being engaged in business at Hillsboro, Texas. The daughter
and J.L. DOUNING were at the bedside when death came to their mother. Interment was
made at Fairmount."
Lif: per Jackson SMITH, Elendor smoked a corn cob pipe. From
MSS by Jackson SMITH: "It seems great-grandmother DOUNING (her boys later Americanized
the name more by spelling it Downing) (my note--it was spelled DOUNING for a while in
TX, but prior to that it had always been DOWNING) was strong-willed also. Grandmother
(Sarah A. (DOWNING) ROBBINS) saw to it that the family went to church "every time the
door was open" one of her brood once remarked. For reasons all her own,
Great-grandmother DOUNING decided one time that she didn't want to go. Again,
Grandmother's will prevailed and the entire family was loaded up and on the way to
church. About midway, Great-grandmother decided to defy her daughter and simply jumpted
out of the moving surry, and, in doing so, broke her arm. But she had a victory of
sort: None of the family got to church that night! Another time lightning struck the
old house, came down the chimney into the dining room, knocked Great-grandmother DOUNING
across the room and killed the family cat!"

Lif: from conversation with Jackson SMITH, grandson of Powhattan H. ROBBINS
and son of Julia (ROBBINS) SMITH WOLARD, Powhattan never held a steady
job after 1928; lots of short-term jobs. He was in an accident and "had
his head split open." (I'm not sure when this happened, but it appears
that in his later years, Powhattan was a little out of control. Whether
this is directly attributable to the head injury or just to senility is
unknown.) His daughter, Julia (ROBBINS) SMITH WOOLARD, took care of
Powhattan in his later years until he died in 1951.

Dea: from the San Angelo Daily Standard, Sunday Morning, August 1, 1926:
"Girl a Victim of Paralysis; Mis Cora Ellen ROBBINS Dies Suddenly
Saturday -- Funeral Pending.
Paralysis of the respiratory organs late Saturday evening caused the
death of Cora Ellen ROBBINS, 12 years old, at the office of a local
physician. Death ensued as the girl was being made ready to return to
the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.H. ROBBINS, at 120 Allen street.
Miss ROBBINS had undergone an operation for the removal of tonsils and
adenoids early Saturday morning and apparently was getting on very well.
Use of oxygen and a psimotor from the Robert Massie Company failed to
revive the girl after she collapsed, though heart and pulse action was
indicated for some time after breathing ceased.
Funeral arrangements are pending word from a brother, E.L. at Los
Angeles. The Rev. Warren E. STARNES of the Church of Christ will have
charge of the services. The little girl was a member of that church
and also of a Sunday school class taught by Mrs. BUTT. The Johnson's
Funeral Parlor will have charge of the funeral.
Surviving besides the parents are four sisters and three brothers.
They are Mrs. W.V. SMITH, Mrs. Clyde ROBERTS, Miss Larry and Miss Laura
ROBBINS, E.L. of Los Angeles and Jessie and P.H., Jr., of this city."

from MSS by Jackson SMITH: "It seems great-grandmother DOUNING (her boys
later Americanized the name more by spelling it Downing) (my note--it was
spelled DOUNING for a while in TX, but prior to that it had always been
DOWNING) was strong-willed also.
Grandmother (Sarah A. (DOWNING) ROBBINS) saw to it that the family
went to church "every time the door was open" one of her brood once
remarked. For reasons all her own, Great-grandmother DOUNING decided one
time that she didn't want to go. Again, Grandmother's will prevailed and
the entire family was loaded up and on the way to church. About midway,
Great-grandmother decided to defy her daughter and simply jumpted out of
the moving surry, and, in doing so, broke her arm.
But she had a victory of sort: None of the family got to church that
night!
Another time lightning struck the old house, came down the chimney into
the dining room, knocked Great-grandmother DOUNING across the room and
killed the family cat!"

George was in the hospital and not expected to live. George wanted
Jackson to come and get him and bring him back to Ft. Worth (where

NOTES:
Dea: cause of death was tuberculosis
Lif: from a conversation with Jackson SMITH, son of W.V. SMITH, in April 1995:
o W.V. already married (and divorced, I would assume) and had 3
children living in Orange, TX.
o W.V.'s first wife remarried a BROWN
o W.V. came to TX from Jena, LA (in N. Central LA)
o On a visit to Jena, LA, Jackson met an 86 year-old gentleman who
had been the city marshall. He remember "Old Wylie" SMITH and
told Jackson that W.V. had been a barber and a gambler. (Conjecture
is that the barber shop was only a front for an ongoing poker game
in the back.)
o The old gentleman remembered that W.V. had been shot (or shot at)
two times. Once when W.V. left a card game. Apparently W.V. was a
good card player and there were some "sore losers" in town. Another
time someone in a buggy drove up next to W.V. and pulled a shot gun
out from under a lap blanket and shot (at?) him. (Is this the
first drive-by shooting from a buggy?)
o In 1911 W.V. leased 4 acres of land outside town.
o W.V.'s father was Will SMITH. (My note says "buried in a small town
near Jena," but I'm not sure if that refers to W.V. or Will.
o Homer SMITH (brother of W.V.?)
o W.V. served in WWI. Jackson had sent away for records, but needs
service number.

NOTES:
Lif: from a conversion with Jackson SMITH in April, 1995:
o When he was in high school, he hitchhiked from Wichita Falls, TX,
where he was living with his step-father, his mother, and his step-
brother. Was not happy at home. He hitchhiked to San Angelo and
got 2 jobs, lived with his grandparents (that would be Powhattan
and Sallie ROBBINS).
o In 1940 he hitchhiked to El Paso (TX) and then on to California to
look up "Lans" and Pauline ROBBINS who were living in Sherman Oaks.
o Pauline used to run the ROBBINS family down.
o E.L. (or Lans) left money every morning for Jackson while he was
living with them. They let Jackson think that E.L. was still working
as a projectionist for Fox, when in fact he had been fired years ago
and was now working as the assistant manager of the La Reina theater
(in Los Angeles?).
o In 1948 Jackson got a job in a studio in Los Angeles. He tried to
look up E.L. at Fox, which is when he found out that E.L. was no
longer working there. Jackson then went to the La Reina Theater,
where he waited for E.L. to come to work. When E.L. saw Jackson there
E.L. never let on that he had been caught in a lie.

NOTES:
Lif: from a conversion with Dr. SMITH in April, 1995:
o When he was in high school, he hitchhiked from Wichita Falls, TX,
where he was living with his step-father, his mother, and his step-
